We're planning a detective-mystery-themed birthday party for Tani, and tonight we did a dry run. For part of it, I wrote with lemon juice on a piece of paper, and H went to try making it visible. From the other room, I suddenly heard her exclaim:

"These are all friggin' CFLs!"

Um, oops. We need a plan B. :-)

After that we started talking about other ways to do it, and it was a happy thing that being SF fans, we know the combustion temperature of paper. Eventually we found a standard bulb, and the old trick still works. Surprisingly, the hair dryer didn't.

We tried it over the open flame of the stove, too, but fear of burning ourselves kept it from working. This has to be something safe to do with 10 seven-year-olds. In the end, I think we're going with another form of invisible messages: the old pencil impression left on the paper underneath bit.

Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs. Which do not get hot, and therefore do not reveal lemon-juice writing.
